In Caulfield North, we recently completed a residential outdoor shading project focused on improving comfort and usability for a balcony space. The brief called for a practical solution that would reduce harsh sun while still allowing the homeowners to enjoy their outdoor area across changing weather conditions.

We installed three folding arm awnings positioned above the doors that open directly onto the balcony. Each awning was custom fitted to ensure smooth operation and balanced coverage across multiple access points. The fabric selected was Somerton’s Acrylic Plains in G580, a soft sandy beige tone that complements the existing exterior palette while providing excellent UV resistance and durability.

Designed for Year-Round Use

Folding arm awnings are often associated with summer shading, but when thoughtfully designed and installed, they can enhance outdoor living throughout the year. In this case, the awnings help block intense sun in warmer months and provide a protective cover during rainy weather, extending the usability of the balcony even when the weather turns cold. The neutral fabric choice also helps maintain a bright, open feel even when the awnings are extended.

Beyond immediate comfort gains, the installation was also designed with long-term performance in mind. The folding arm system allows the awnings to retract neatly when not in use, preserving clear views and preventing unnecessary weather exposure. Combined with the durable acrylic fabric, the system requires minimal maintenance while continuing to perform reliably across seasonal changes in Melbourne’s varied climate.
